Community Response Team Newsletter Public Health & Emergency Preparedness Updates August 5, 2023

Dear Community, Wow, this summer is flying by! With the summer in full swing, the risk of disruptions from Wildfires also increases. That makes it a great time to attend our upcoming forums on disaster preparation that the West Marin Community Response Team is sponsoring, in partnership with Ross Valley Fire, The Point Reyes Disaster Council, The San Geronimo Valley Readiness Group Disaster Group, The Dance Palace, West Marin Community Services and The San Geronimo Valley Community Center. These extremely useful forums will teach 5 simple steps to prepare for a disaster and will take place on August 22 at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center and August 31 at The Dance Palace. They are free and include some good food, as well as assistance in signing up for disaster alerts. Being ready can make a big difference in a disaster! Another way to make a big difference is to donate blood. There are still slots available for our upcoming Blood Drive on August 12th at the Dance Palace. Learn more in English and Spanish here. Our statewide blood shortage is severe and this is an awesome way to save lives. Speaking of saving lives, there is a free upcoming event at Toby's Feed Barn, where you can learn in 15 minutes the basics of stopping a bleed, hands-only CPR, administering Narcan, and using an AED. Learn more in English and Spanish. It will be open to all ages. Also, keep in mind that the lifesaving medication Narcan, which counteracts an opioid overdose is freely available all over West Marin. See locations below. Even more on saving lives! Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death in Marin and nationally. You can help save a life by taking action before the ambulance arrives. With the PulsePoint Respond app, you can be notified when a cardiac arrest occurs nearby. The app connects the over 300 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) throughout Marin. You may be the closest person and offer the life-saving care they need. Download the app today.  Although the impact and devastation the pandemic has wrought has greatly lessened, COVID-19 is still with us. In fact, according to Marin County's COVID-19 Dashboard, cases are on the rise. If you need COVID tests, the West Marin Community Response Team still has steady supplies for those in need. Please see our locations and times below. Here, Dr. Matt Willis talks about some fascinating findings on genetics and COVID-19. On a final note, Ritter Center's Mobile Clinic and the SPAHR Center will be back in West Marin August 17 at both The West Marin Community Services' food pantry and The Bolinas Community Center. They offer free to low-cost healthcare services for those under or uninsured plus harm reduction and addiction services. You can see a list of their services in English and Spanish. You can also see their full August calendar in Marin for all their locations here. Take care and stay safe, The West Marin Community Response Team

The Facts on Narcan What is it?

Naloxone (brand name NARCAN®) is a life-saving FDA-approved medication that is used to reverse the effects of overdoses from opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, and morphine.

Naloxone can be administered by bystanders in two ways: through injections (like a shot) or via nasal spray. NARCAN® is the spray version, which comes 2/kit.
