La Vida es Sueño is a Spanish-language play by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Published in 1636, it is a philosophical allegory regarding the human condition and the mystery of life.  Following a dire prophecy that Prince Segismundo (Julio Lucas) would bring disaster to the country and death to his father, King Basilio (Mark Alderdice),  the king imprisons him at birth in a tower, locked away in secret until adulthood.  When Basilio briefly frees him, Segismundo experiences life for the first time. The play's themes are the conflict between free will and fate, restoring one's honor, the conflict between father and son and dreams vs. reality. This play remains one of Calderón's best-known and most studied works, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest plays of all time. The play also features West Marin locals Carolyn Placente, Richard Vallejos, Carolina Renteria, Geoff Hoyle* and many more multilingual and multi-generational community talent!
